If you are in need of some minor exterior home repairs or minor private sanitary sewer improvements, the City of Lee’s Summit’s Minor Home Repair program is worth considering.
For more than 12 years the City has offered this program that encourages neighborhood conservation through property maintenance by providing grants to help cure the most visible home defects which may adversely affect the value of the home as well as surrounding properties. To date, more than 165 properties in the City have been improved with these grant funds distributed by the City and funded through the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant program (CDBG).
The City will accept applications for this program from now until August 31, 2010.
Only single-family, owner-occupied residential units will be eligible for this program. Eligible repairs include the following:
• Repair and replacement of windows and doors
• Roof repair and replacement of roof covering
• Exterior paint
• Repair to porches and steps
• Repair to exterior foundation walls
• Exterior walls and trim
• Flashing /guttering
• Private sanitary sewer repairs (lateral repair/backwater valves)
Low-to-moderate income homeowners are eligible based on total household income and must fall within the following HUD guidelines:
Household Size Maximum Income
1 $39,500
2 $45,150
3 $50,800
4 $56,400
5 $60,950
6 $65,450
7 $69,950
8 $74,450

The applicant will be expected to contribute a share of the fix-up cost. The homeowner’s contribution will not be below $20 or above $500, and will be scaled based on income.
The maximum grant amount is $10,000 per household for home repairs and $3,000 per household for private sanitary sewer improvements. The City will prioritize applications based on the greatest need in terms of household income and needed repairs. Applications will be selected in September for participation in the program or placed on a waiting list. All repairs are subject to federal environmental regulation compliance.
Applications are available from the Codes Administration Department located in Lee’s Summit City Hall, 220 SE Green Street and online from the City’s Web site at http://cityofls.net/Development.aspx.

SEE is a grass-roots, citizen-driven group committed to providing support and education for sustainable lifestyles in our community. SEE meets the 2nd Monday of the month at 6:30pm in City Hall.Sustain Enviromental Excellence (SEE)
As we talked in our meeting last night, here are the little videos I was telling you about – they are at www.thefuntheory.com. I have seen “The World’s Deepest Bin” and “The Bottle Bank Arcade Game – they are hilarious (they are on page 2 of 2). There are some other really good ones, too, that aren’t solid waste related…like “The Piano Staircase.” It takes a minute or so for the page to load, but it is completely worth it!
Okay…back to business…here is what we came up with at our SEE meeting last night:
Mission Statement: SEE is a citizen group which encourages, supports, and promotes environmentally sustainable practices within Lee’s Summit, Missouri through its citizens, businesses, and local government.
Next we need to work on our Vision Statement. Here are some action word we identified that we may consider using for this: driven (as in citizen-driven), educate or education, improve, increase awareness, increase participation (as in public participation…volunteers), provide opportunities.
Over the course of the next month, please generate some ideas for a Vision Statement and bring them with you to our next meeting, which will be Monday, July 12 at 6:30pm in the Public Works Conference Room in City Hall.
Thanks!
